Route 66 trip may 12 2026

 It is Tuesday morning and we are headed to Springfield Missouri, the first stop on day one. Adventure begins. Lunch at Smiths restaurant in Bolivar Mo. First impression was poor, the chicken was brought out nearly raw and they were out of baked potatoes. Frank’s pork tenderloin looked good.  Waitress said new cook. They took $5 off our meal. The jury is out til later on to see how I feel. They did cook it better on second try. So next stop Route 66 car museum. Awesome 50 or so old cars . Found out talking with the guy who took our money. The owner has sold all the cars to Mecum in Florida. Will be closed by next April. One is going to the United Kingdom and one to Westminster. Was nice to hear history The next stop we went to Bass Pro.  Huge - they have a wildlife museum, aquarium, photography museum and nascar. Took 3 hours to go through and they had a route 66 special $66 total, instead of $49 each. It was good but a little long. Now to our Motel, Rookwood Motor Court. Full bed, no cable and one chair. It is called the Elvis room. Lots of Elvis pictures, can barely walk beside bed. People are staying next door and you can here them talk. Will be a interesting night. Off to dinner at the oldest Steak and Shake. Was good normal Steak and Shake. Drive around downtown and stopped at Walmart to get gas and tshirts. No luck for shirts.

Grand Canyon - Day 4

Today we started the morning at McDonald’s with coffee and biscuits. We can tell we are in a tourist spot. $8.79 for a egg and cheese biscuit. Big Macs are $12 for the sandwich only, (we didn't buy one). We headed to the park at 8:30. There was a line but was only 10-15 minutes long. We drove the Desert View drive on 64 highway, 22 very scenic miles. We stopped 4 or 5 times to see very awesome views of the canyon. There was a tower at one spot, but an hour and a half wait to go up in it, so we passed.  One stop was a National Historic Landmark Hallowed Ground. On June 30th, 1956  a TWA Super Constellation and DC-7 collided midair (over the canyon) and killed 128 passengers. It was the deadliest crash in American commercial aviation history at the time. The spot is called Temple Chura Buttes. After it happened, congress created the FAA to increase air safety.  We also stopped at Tusyan ruins that was sort of a bust except I got a pair of earrings. Albuquerque - Day 2

We left Oklahoma City at 8 AM, headed to Albuquerque NM. We drove 543 miles.  Very flat terrain driving. Lots of wind turbines. Saving the planet I guess. Lol. Saw oil derricks throughout the state.  W e stopped in Amarillo, Texas at a quilt/cross stitch shop (The Knotted Thread) where Cindy bought a pattern and I bought a little material. Wanted to buy a Jerome sewing machine but no room in car. Hade a nice lunch at Jason’s deli. Made it to Albuquerque at 4:00.  We wanted to go up a mountain (Sandia Peak Tramway) but they said they sold out of tickets 5 minutes prior to us getting there. We did go up to the lodge and took a few pictures.  Decided to eat local at County Line Bbq. We all rated it a 6-7 but enjoyed it. Headed to hotel Homewood Suites. Nice big room settled in for the night.  We have had breakfast at both hotels. Frank rated yesterday better than today. I liked them both. Heading to Tusayan (Grand Canyon) tomorrow. Day 8 - Zion

 We meet at 8:30 for our complementary breakfast at our Hotel. Left at 9:15 for the park. We drove 20 miles to entrance of the park. So happy we had a park pass from last year. We saw signs that parking lots were full but continued into the park . Frank decided to drive the Zion Mount Carmel Highway since no parking spots to be found. Was beautiful scenery all the way and we went through a mile long tunnel. We then turned around and went back to find parking to take the buses up. The bus had 6 stops. We decided to go to the top, then stop on the way down. Temple of Sinawava was the top.  We walked about a half mile took some pictures of the streams.And walked back to get on the bus and discovered each stop required hiking to see anything. The men do not like to hike, so it was a BUST. So we rode the bus back down to the entrance of the park then had to get on another one to get to our car. The buses were packed. Got to stand up all the way, on the way down we found seats....
