Grand Canyon - Day 4

Today we started the morning at McDonald’s with coffee and biscuits. We can tell we are in a tourist spot. $8.79 for a egg and cheese biscuit. Big Macs are $12 for the sandwich only, (we didn't buy one).

We headed to the park at 8:30. There was a line but was only 10-15 minutes long. We drove the Desert View drive on 64 highway, 22 very scenic miles. We stopped 4 or 5 times to see very awesome views of the canyon. There was a tower at one spot, but an hour and a half wait to go up in it, so we passed. 




One stop was a National Historic Landmark Hallowed Ground. On June 30th, 1956  a TWA Super Constellation and DC-7 collided midair (over the canyon) and killed 128 passengers. It was the deadliest crash in American commercial aviation history at the time. The spot is called Temple Chura Buttes. After it happened, congress created the FAA to increase air safety. 

We also stopped at Tusyan ruins that was sort of a bust except I got a pair of earrings. A lot of people sell earrings, dream catchers, bracelets, necklaces, etc. all southwest style. We did see the other side of Humphreys Peak 12,633 feet elevation in the San Francisco mountains, we first saw it coming into Flagstaff yesterday. 

We are now headed to Horseshoe Bend on highway 89 near Page, Arizona. We were planning on going to a Antelope Canyon, Slot Canyon but called yesterday and they were already booked for today. We stopped at Cameron trading post for lunch . Good food I had my chicken and fruit, Frank had a chef salad, Lloyd and Cindy had their special Navaho tacos . They left a little food because they were huge. They had a great gift shop and Cindy and I got to do some shopping. 



Onward to Horseshoe Bend, which was a lot farther than we thought. We arrived, took a mile and a half hike down hill to see it. Cindy and I thought it was worth it - the men not so much. Especially walking back up the hill,  then the drive back to Tusayan. 




We saw mule deer coming back through the park. Drove 270 miles round trip today. We ended the evening at Plaza Bonita Restaurant. A Mexican restaurant with very  good food. Tomorrow we are off to Vegas.

We left Albuquerque NM at  8:30 AM  heading to Tusayan, AZ. We drove 408 miles. We stopped along the way at Tom and Susie Diner in Holbrook, AZ.    Food was ok. Nothing to write home about for local flavor.  As we made our way to Tusayan, we stopped and went through the Painted Desert/Petrified Forest National Park. We saw a mini Grand Canyon and lots of petrified wood. Stopped at a gift shop and that petrified wood is expensive. One polished slab had a  price  tag of $24,000.  Outside of Flagstaff, we saw the San Francisco mountain range. Some peaks still had snow on them.  We made it in time to drive to the Grand Canyon South Rim from our hotel, the Red Feather Lodge, only 5 miles from the south gate. Beautiful seeing the South rim. Day 8 - Zion

 We meet at 8:30 for our complementary breakfast at our Hotel. Left at 9:15 for the park. We drove 20 miles to entrance of the park. So happy we had a park pass from last year. We saw signs that parking lots were full but continued into the park . Frank decided to drive the Zion Mount Carmel Highway since no parking spots to be found. Was beautiful scenery all the way and we went through a mile long tunnel. We then turned around and went back to find parking to take the buses up. The bus had 6 stops. We decided to go to the top, then stop on the way down. Temple of Sinawava was the top.  We walked about a half mile took some pictures of the streams.And walked back to get on the bus and discovered each stop required hiking to see anything. The men do not like to hike, so it was a BUST. So we rode the bus back down to the entrance of the park then had to get on another one to get to our car. The buses were packed. Day 6 - Las Vegas

We got up and met the Wilsons at 8:30 for breakfast at the Luxor. Food was very good but $22 for two eggs, three strips of bacon and some toast is ridiculous. Add another $5 for coffee. We drove around to explore. Drove down Las Vegas Blvd. heading toward the stratosphere. Was thinking of going up it again (we did years ago for $5 each) but $22 each dollars just to go up  was a little too pricey for us.   We are going to see Shin Lim tonight at the Palazzo so we needed to scope out where to park for the show. Saw Trump tower, Circus Circus, Winn etc. drove very close to The Sphere. Ended up at the Bellagio. It has beautiful flowers everywhere. Took some picks of an area that was beautiful.  Cindy and I ended up playing video poker at the bar. Once again they comp'ed Frank and Lloyd’s drinks. We played awhile and ended up losing nothing. We continued to walk around found a new poker machine where you play lots of hands at once but we both lost $20. We walked outside and en...
